Brussels sprouts

It's that time of year again. Brussels sprouts are appearing in my grocery store. Here is a quick and easy (and delicious) way to fix them. Wash them. Slice off the hard ends, then slice each one in half length-wise. Saute them in a little olive oil with the cut side down. That's it. I suppose you could add a little garlic to the pan and salt them, too. I have to count as I serve lest any of my kids get short-changed a Brussels sprout.

Brussels sprouts are my kindergarten nightmare. My teacher made everyone eat one. UUGGGHHH!!!! I've never eaten one since, at least knowingly. I will eat green peas and black beans. I strongly prefer not to eat black eyed peas or anything that resembles a lima. But a Brussels sprout? YEECH!!!

That's funny . . . Counting the sprouts. Sounds like my house.

I, just in the last couple of years, acquired a taste for broccoli and asparagus. I haven't made it to brussels sprouts yet. My mother noticed my kids never eat sweet potatoes. Hmmm. Wonder why??? :)

Bet your house is like mine with different likes and dislikes. Of course, I have always done the thing I was taught to do and make them eat a little of it all. There is where the counting comes in. Matt counts his green beans because he does not like them so he wants to know exactly how many he HAS to eat. Everyone else just suffers in silence. He is the only one brave enough to ask for the count. :)

I am so excited about this post - I've been needing to know what to do with brussel sprouts. Michaela discovered them this summer, and I've been cooking them for her, but I haven't had a clue how to do it. We've been eating them, but I don't think we've really been liking them. The motivation here has been simply in the name..."muscle sprouts" - keep in mind, I have mostly boys. I'm going to give this a try and see if that helps.

We tried the brussel sprouts... not a hit around here. But, Steve wants to know where he can send a care package if you think those are so great! He seriously wants to send you some "good" stuff!

Try this topping for steamed b. sprouts: mix a little Tahini with water and lemon juice to a consistency of gravy. Toss in the b. sprouts. It's my husband's favorite.
