Costumes and Candy

We recognize that sometimes it's hard to be a staff kid. You live in a bubble. Your teachers are your parents' best friends and teammates, so everything you do, they find out about it. So, over the years we've tried to come up with a few little perks, just to let all our staff kids (up to about 16 now!) know that we appreciate the sacrifices they make, too. One of those perks is letting them dress up in costumes on October 31 and go to willing teachers' houses for candy. This year Miss Middler was Toadette, from Mario Party. The inspiration for this costume was the pillow my sweet friend Kim gave her so long ago. She plopped it on her head one night and we all said, "You look like Toadette!" The "braids" were achieved with her own pink tights and balls borrowed from her little brother.

Firstborn debated about dressing up, but when our 10th grade staff kid said, "She'd better dress up! We're trick-or-treating, too!" she decided to do it. I think she is the cutest Smurfette I've ever seen. A quick trip to the pazaar for 2 lira blue tights and a 1 lira white pillow case, some homemade face paint, and she was all set!

Spidey was easy. He dresses up as this every day! Do you think the real Spidey has such nice blue eyes under there?

Sweet Cheeks decided on Rapunzel far before October 31st and she never wavered. Her oldest sister made her wig from yarn and old panty hose.

And Twinkle Toes was a girl pirate from head-to-toe with a costume we snagged at last year's rummage sale.

The staff was so sweet to bless our kids with treats. Our new teacher Mr. Knox dressed as a pirate to answer the door. He'd lost his eye in a bowl of noodles. Miss Middler (of course!) eagerly volunteered to dig for it. She found a boiled egg, which he promptly popped in his mouth! I asked Big Ben about it and he said, "Why dat' pirate wear he underwear?"

And of course, good ol' Miss Morton played her Old Lady part well. Powdered hair, a dark room lit with candles, and a creaky old lady voice entertained the little trick-or-treaters. She baked them all a special cake...a kitty litter cake!

Thanks for another fun year, all!
