Welcome, IKEA

In Singapore we had several IKEA stores, which is a Swedish home store. We used to love walking around IKEA and eating their famous meatballs in the cafeteria. It's something we missed when we moved here. I researched the meatballs and learned how to make them (they are held together with potatoes instead of the Turkish way: bulgur or the American way: rice). Istanbul has two of these stores, we kept wondering why they wouldn't just share one with us. Anytime we were in Istanbul, we'd make an IKEA run and load up on a few jars of the the lingonberry relish to go with our meatballs, Christmas wrapping paper, a little chalkboard for the kids.

And then one day we heard we were getting an IKEA in our city. We all said, "We'll believe when we see it." We started to see advertisements around town that they were hiring. They said June 2011 was the target opening date. And guess what! It happened, even in a city where well-meaning promises of events, stores, and political campaigns are sometimes forgotten. It was time for a visit!

Miss B not only teaches Sweet Cheeks, she is also a dear friend of mine. So, for her birthday, I gave her a coupon for a free ride to and dinner at IKEA. (It's far away...and gas is 10 dollars a gallon, so it was a better gift than it sounds!) While CC was in Japan, we made it a four-some of friends and had a wonderful time perusing the store. I wonder if anyone else was excited enough to have a picture made like us. The sweet Turkish gal who took it even said, "Say Chees!" (That's how she said it.)

Thanks for the fun night, gals!

We are IKEA-less. I just read an article in the Kyiv Post about this, too- Ukraine ranks 145th or thereabouts out of 189 in the world for bad business dealings...no IKEA here in the near future!
