Things I've Learned from Teens

I never really saw myself as a youth worker type person. I suppose there is a little too much teacher in me to just cut loose and stay up all night at lock-ins. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of working with the teens in our schools in Singapore and Turkey. I have learned so much from them. Once in Singapore, I determined that my wardrobe needed a little updating, particularly in the area of jeans. I looked around at the sweet girls in our high school, who dressed sharp (Megan, Tracy, Evie...you all know who you are). I realized they were wearing a new kind of jean...one that had a little lower waistband. So, the next time we went to Memphis, I determined to buy a new pair of jeans. I went to Old Navy on my mission and bought some good looking jeans. That afternoon, after putting on my brand new jeans, I bent over to tie my toddler's shoes and felt "air." Back there. I drove straight back to Old Navy and had the following conversation...

Me: Excuse me, ma'am? I have a problem.

Store Clerk: What's da problem?

Me: Well, I want to be hip. I want the trendy new jeans that don't come up as high, but I have toddlers. And those toddlers need their shoes tied. When I tied their shoes today, I felt air. Back there.

Store Clerk: GIRL! You know what da matta! Look what you done did. You went and bought ULTRA low rise, girl. You gotta get LO RISE.

Me: Ok, (glancing at her tag) Taneesha, show me to the low rise because I do have shoes to tie.

So began the switch to low rise jeans. I have since learned the term (from the teens) for the little bit of flab (that some of us, a-hem, have) just above said low rise jeans. It must go somewhere, you see, and the jeans leave no spot for it. It is called a "muffin top."

Today I dressed Benaiah and noticed he had a serious muffin top. I took this picture for you.

What is the hip term for the bulge "below" the waist line? Muffin-bottom, maybe? GOSH, I feel like an old woman!!

Okay, all you young trend setting mothers . . . When you get to be my age (50) you will learn what a muffin-bottom is. You will also find out that you enjoy dressing like you did in your 20's and 30's and won't care what anybody thinks about you. :)

P. S. Actually, I do care a little and compensate with an up-to-date hairstyle. :)

Oh, and I can't ignore Benaiah's picture. Since he and Maverick share the same birthday, I am quick to see similarities. When Maverick was a toddler he would sing to the song . . . "There's just something women like about a pickup man," referring to a toy pickup truck and little boys who truck around their female friends' Barbie dolls.

Point being, I LOVED Benaiah's shirt! :)

yes, I can so relate to this. We have recently been through a wardrobe overhaul down here in Izmir. Then my younger friends (college and high school age) discussed with me "what not to wear". Unfortunately, they didn't have the 2000 British sterling that Trinny and Susannah always give the WHAT NOT TO WEAR ladies. They did give me a few pointers, which was when the phrase "muffin top" came into play. theoretically speaking, of course. So I was left with a considerably purged wardrobe and the instructions that I could keep several items if I promised to replace them when I went to America, AND promised to wear them as little as possible in the meantime. I also found that I had to buy new, ahem, undergarments to go with those low rise jeans. Thank goodness long tops are in style. They definitely help the "air back there" issue.

And what did I call it this summer? A Mushroom!! HA HA! They are shaped the same, right? You can tell I'm not around teenagers too much. You certainly were in Memphis at the Old Navy and not Franklin!!
