Missin' Babies

God has really ministered to my spirit this week, especially in light of studying Daniel and Babylon. We are living in a modern day Babylon. One of my earliest school memories is the bulletin board my Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. McManus, put up the first week of school. It had a giant lion and said, "Dare to be a Daniel." That is my prayer for my life. I want to be a Daniel. He outlived/outlasted many kings and rulers. Sometimes he was elevated, sometimes not. I am sure he was hated. But he kept doing the right thing day after day. May it be said of me!

And now, why am I missing babies??? My friend Angie posted this picture of her baby girl. I suppose it's the round face, chubby cheeks, toothless grin. It was enough to really make me miss having a baby at home. So, readers, what makes you miss having a baby? And if you do have a baby at home, what are you enjoying the most?

My children are now 32, 30, and 27. I never suffered 'empty-nest syndrome' but rejoiced in a new career and a new ministry. I did not miss my kids being young, did not feel that visceral urge that only a woman can feel when I saw a baby.

But then, 3 weeks ago, my first grandchild was born. It's a long story, but because of circumstances it took me a while to warm up to the idea of a baby.

But when I first saw this baby - the child of my child - oh, my word. I cannot get enough of him. My heart overflows with joy and wonder, and he is so, so snuggly that I cannot put him down.

My oldest is almost 12 and the youngest is 2. For the last 12 years we have welcomed a new addition every 3 years or so. I am staying focused and excited about all the things we will be able to do now that the end of diaper bags, bottles/sippy cups, are fading. There is nothing better than snuggling with a sweet baby, but there is always the church nursery to volunteer and I can make plans to be an awesome grandmother one day. http://abovethesouthernpines.blogspot.com/

I saw that sweet picture on facebook! I could just eat her up!! Some of our dear friends here had a baby last week and when I took them a meal and held her, it made me realized that my sweet 18 month old is more a toddler than a baby now! I'm enjoying each stage so much but I do miss those sweet nursing snuggles that only I could have!

I love what Jody said . . . I don't miss babies, per say, but I have missed my kids being babies/young. I think that is because they are all on the verge of leaving home at once . . . It has been such hard work and effort by them and for them, to get to where they are going that there is a lot of satisfaction in seeing them achieve their goals. Kathleen permanently this time. Two for college in states far away and then one in the Coast Guard. I look forward to time with just David and I once again. It has been MANY years since it was just the two of us . . .

Maybe this is why God designed grandchildren. I can only imagine the feelings I will have. I am sure you will hear me from here to Turkey should I ever have a grandchild. :)

LOVE the picture!!!!! So special that you shared it. :D I love my baby girl and yes, even looking at this picture of not so long ago makes me see how much she has grown and I am just trying to cherish the moments!! She will be 2 in January and then we'll have another baby to welcome to our family! My how time does fly! I'm not sure that baby feeling will ever go away for me...maybe that's why my mom had 10! ;)
